Spine Road High School in Rocklands, Mitchell’s Plain celebrated their 30th Anniversary by hosting a gala dinner on Saturday 29th of March 2014 in the school hall. The hall was packed with over 500 guests attending the function.
The keynote speakers included Mr Trevor Manuel, Ashwin Williamse, ex Springbok rugby player and Mr Cameron Dougmore. Ashwin Williamse gave an inspiration talk on overcoming diversity and staying positive, while Mr Trevor Manuel took an interesting trip down memory lane – unpacking his long history with Mr Najaar (the principal of Spine Road High School) – and his history with the school. Mr Dougmore discussed the challengers in education and how a school like Spine Road High stands out above the rest in overcoming some of the major issues facing schools, our youth and educators.
Among the guests were Christian Randrianampizafy, Director of the Francaise Alliance and Dale Stanton, ex Springbok rugby player. Mr Waggie, an ex teacher of Spine Road High School flew in from Australia to attend the function. Spine Road High took pride in handing over a number over long service awards to teachers. They presented the current and ex deputy principals and the first principal of the school Mr M.A. Davis with lovely gifts. Mr Najaar was pleasantly surprised by his staff with a number a very unexpected gifts and a heart warming thank you speech delivered by Mrs Harnekar, the deputy principal. The evening was not short of entertainment, ex learner and Idols finalised, Kashiefah Blaauw took to the stage and sing “The Greatest Love of All” – as Spine Road High will always be her greatest love. Wasief Piekaan joined the celebrations later in the evening and entertained the guest with a song. Aziza Richards a current learner at the school, joined by her grandfather (an ex learner of the school) in a few songs. A number of ex learners shared their experiences at Spine Road High with the guests, and unpacked their successful careers as doctors and high level professionals.
Guests enjoyed well catered three course meal, and ex learners and educators spent the evening reuniting and networking.
