Defenders of the Blue

The Grade 10 Life Sciences learners, joined the Defenders of the Blue Youth Citizen Science Program, under the leadership of the organisation “Sea the Bigger Picture”; a team of passionate young scientists, marine biologists, environmentalists, conservationists and free divers.  Their focus is on coastal environmental education and solutions for ocean and marine pollution. Their aim is to develop leadership, awareness of self and an appreciation for the environment.

The Defenders of the Blue program is an intensive four- week program that involves:

  1. Learning how to snorkel
  2. Scientific method
  3. Observing marine ecosystems
  4. Studying rock pools using the I Naturalist App. (An App that helps them identify unknown species)

Besides this program being fun and exciting, the learners are being taught invaluable skills and are acquiring a wealth of knowledge regarding marine life. This program really enhances their love and appreciation for marine life, to “sea” the bigger picture, changing their narratives and becoming true DEFENDERS OF THE BLUE.
